The better wines coming from Canada
are nearly all from the province of British Columbia in the southwest
corner of the country. This region has a cool climate with a long
dry growing season. The best wines seem to be those produced from
varieties that do well in Germany
and Alsace such as Riesling
and Gewurztraminer.
In the Eastern parts of Canada, the production has centered on
winemaking with French-hybrid grapes. The wines are of local interest
but have not developed a market outside the region.
